Please join FSCJ Professor Dr. Debidatta Mahapatra, internationally renowned political science expert in conflict management and peacebuilding, for a lively workshop exploring international relations and trade.

The fascinating conversation will begin with a theoretical-philosophical perspective and analyze select current developments from that perspective. Starting from Immanuel Kant’s ‘perpetual peace’ through trade, republicanism and international cooperation to Adam Smith’s ‘invisible hand’ of market, from expansion of technology and trade in the post-WWII period to the formalization of global economic structures such as GATT and WTO – international relations and trade have witnessed continuous evolution. And if one factors the political dimension, they have seen contestation due to emerging forces of globalization and emerging powers like China challenging the existing global economic order. Scholars like Normal Angell cautioned earlier against such contestation and called war ‘orthodox statecraft’ and ‘suicidal’ and political leaders like Dwight Eisenhower advocated for peace among nations. The presentation will explore, by using various interactive tools such as Kahoot, group discussion and audiovisuals, all these dimensions of international political economy while examining recent developments such as Greenland.

We will also participate in an interactive trade/tariff related lesson that can be used directly in the classroom.

Let’s explore the world together at this engaging and interactive workshop where all participants will receive a $40 Amazon gift card, a certificate of completion, classroom materials, and dinner.
